Zoo rhinos fitted with Fitbit for study to help wild rhinos | KTA

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The Abilene Zoo rhino was recently fitted with a Fitbit as part of a study to help rhinos in the wild.

Macho the Rhino was recruited this summer to participate in a global study conducted by the American Institute for Rhino Studies.

Zoo staff and Disney Wildlife Park members have been taking all sorts of parameters and samples from Macho since June in an effort to learn more about the rhinos from his blood, measurements, of his food and even a Fitbit strapped to one of his ankles. .

It is dangerous for wild rhinos to be tranquilized and studied, so captive participants like Macho are needed to help the endangered species thrive.

The study will continue through at least next spring, and Abilene Zoo staff are thrilled that Macho is continuing to help his fellow rhinos.

World Rhino Day was Thursday, so there will be a special event at the Abilene Zoo on Saturday where attendees can learn more about Macho.
