Zion Williamson’s family unhappy with pelicans, want him to leave New Orleans, report says

All eyes are on Zion… again.

According to a new report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Joe Vardon and William Guillory, the Pelicans “haven’t been able to put together the right pieces to make rising star Zion Williamson and his family happy,” which has suggested that Williamson might want to leave.

Charania’s report says Williamson’s family have been listening to her with their general dissatisfaction with the organization, which potentially influenced Williamson to want to leave New Orleans as soon as possible. The report says Williamson’s family want him “on another team.”

The Athletic says Williamson is focused on the coming season and is staying in New Orleans.

Reports throughout the season have indicated that now fired head coach Stan Van Gundy has clashed with the players and the team’s front office, and the report from The Athletic says Van Gundy has drawn anger from Williamson’s family. Van Gundy was “too rigid and demanding as a head coach”.

Van Gundy only lasted one season in New Orleans, and Williamson will now have his third coach in three seasons with the Association.

It is also noted in The Athletic’s report that Williamson’s family believe New Orleans is not doing enough to support Williamson as a player of his caliber or reputation.

Williamson stirred the pot a bit after an April game against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, when he sang the praises of MSG, calling the arena his favorite place to play, leading to speculation that he might want to get out of NOLA.

“Honestly, I think – outside of New Orleans, obviously – I think this could be my favorite place to play outside of New Orleans. I can’t even lie to you. I can’t lie to you.” Williamson said.

Williamson, who turns 21 in July, was selected No.1 overall by the Pelicans in the 2019 NFL Draft. Due to his reputation and production as a player, he is on track for be eligible for a supermax extension with the team. He will not be eligible for free agency until 2023.

Until then, however, the rumor mill is spinning.
