Zinedine Zidane opens up on Man Utd manager job and hints at taking over as PSG boss in future

ZINEDINE ZIDANE has lifted the lid on why he refused to take charge of Manchester United last year.

The former Real Madrid gaffer, 50, was heavily linked with the Red Devils job after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

It was even reported that the 1998 World Cup winner was taking English lessons to further fuel speculation about his intention to join United.

Although it has been claimed that his wife Veronique does not want to live in Manchester.

Zizou eventually snubbed a move to Old Trafford, which resulted in Ralf Rangnick being appointed on an interim basis.

And Zidane, who hasn’t been in a managerial role since leaving the Bernabeu in May 2021, has now explained why he never decided to join United.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Zidane said: “When I’m told: ‘Do you want to go to Manchester?’ I understand English but I don’t master it completely.

“I know there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language. But I work differently.

“To win, many elements come into play. It’s a global context. I know what I need to win.

“So of course you can’t win but I know it takes at least this, this and that. And I want to put everything on my side to optimize the win.”

Zidane has also been linked with the Paris Saint-Germain vacancy following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

And the Los Blancos legend hinted he would welcome a move to the Parc des Princes in the future, as he remarked: “Never say never.

“Especially when you’re a coach these days. When I was a player I could choose, almost any club.

“As a coach, there are not fifty clubs I can go to. There are two or three possibilities.

“If I go back to a club, it’s to win. I say that in all modesty. That’s why I can’t go anywhere.”

Although Zidane has stressed that it’s his dream to lead the France national team.

He said: “I’m not done with Les Bleus. I want to do it, of course. I’ll be [France coach], I hope one day. When? It does not depend on me.

“It’s the height. So, since I’ve been there and now that I’m a coach, the France team is firmly anchored in my head.”

Before adding: “My deepest desire is there. The France team is the most beautiful thing there is.”
