Ukraine is fighting the Russian invaders to preserve the European “way of life”, Volodymyr Zelenskyy proclaimed Thursday in Brussels, pleading passionately for his country’s accession to the EU.
“I am here to defend our people’s way back,” the Ukrainian president said from the lectern of the European Parliament, addressing hundreds of lawmakers and senior EU officials.
And that way home, he said, is the EU.
“This is our Europe, these are our rules, this is our way of life, and for Ukraine this is a way home,” he said.
It was Zelenskyy’s first in-person speech in Brussels since invading Russia last year, as part of a trip to cement Ukraine’s ties with the EU. Kyiv hopes to join the EU in record time and convince EU countries to pledge not only modern tanks but also fighter jets as Russia prepares for a new offensive.
Zelenskyy’s speech leaned heavily on the theme that Ukraine and the EU are interdependent, sharing both values, a history — and a future.
“Ukraine will become a member of the European Union,” he predicted.
