As simple as the dish may seem, making the perfect mashed potato isn’t that easy, with countless things that could potentially ruin the signature taste and texture.
For those who can’t imagine their dinner without the perfect side dish, TikTok celebrity Michelin-starred chef Poppy O’Toole has shared five key steps to upping your game.
The first step, she says, is to cut the potatoes into even rounds – while many tend to throw whole potatoes into the pan, chopping them evenly will cut cooking time.
As for cooking, Poppy insisted on always putting them in cold water first rather than boiling them and adding a generous spoonful of salt.
“Number three, be sure to steam dry your potatoes – so just put a tea towel on them.

“This,” she said, “will make them nice and dry and very chewy. ”
Another key ingredient in the ultimate mash is cream or milk, which gives the potatoes a velvety texture that melts.
According to the chef, who recently launched her cookbook, Poppy Cooks: The food you needit is imperative to heat the cream before adding it to the potatoes.
That’s because it will blend better, she explained.
“Number five, add your butter to your potatoes before you start sifting them.
“A sieve or masher makes your mash less heavy than a masher,” Poppy shared a bonus tip.
“These five tips will change your mashed potato game forever.”
However, despite the hacks, not everyone was impressed, with one critical comment: ”I bet it’s delicious but honestly way too much hassle for me, I can barely bother cooking at all to be honest. ”
Someone else said: “no one sifts the mash”, a second adding: “no need for heavily salted table water”.
But it wasn’t all negative, as there was a lot of positive feedback, for example: ”I sifted potatoes instead of mashing them and it really was the best decision of my life.’ ‘
A supportive fan wrote, “I really don’t understand the negativity here wow!
“If I’m going to cook food, I want it to taste the best possible so I can enjoy it to the fullest. ”
One viewer joked, “I’ve been cooking my potatoes in cold water for 3 days.
”Still not cooked. Son crying. Please advise.”
