BALTIMORE (AP) — New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes said he deactivated his Twitter account after screenshots of tweets from a decade ago that contained racial slurs emerged Sunday.
Cortes appeared to be quoting rap lyrics in at least some of the tweets, and he didn’t appear to be using the words to directly put anyone down.
“I felt like that wasn’t the right message I wanted to send when I was 17,” Cortes said ahead of Monday’s game against Baltimore. “It happened 10 years ago. I deactivated my Twitter to clean up.
“This is not acceptable,” he added. “I think I could have done it and said it differently. But I’m here today to say I’m going to work on it and fix it.”
