A rare species of the world’s smallest Indian mouse deer, known locally as ‘Turre’, has been spotted for the first time in five years in the jungles of the Dantewada tribal region in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.Residents Locals noticed that the mouse deer had minor injuries on its neck and leg, and immediately notified the forest service. “After consultation with the veterinarians at Raipur Jungle Safari, the local vet, Dr Manoj Verma, treated the female mouse deer who was kept under observation for two to three days. We released her back into the jungle when we felt it was good,” Divisional Forestry Officer (DFO) Sandeep Balaga told the Times of India daily. A species of deer in the world is rarely seen due to its low population. “We see this animal after a five-year interval – and that only because of his injury. Even though the cause of the injury could not be determined, it could be natural,” Balaga said. The Indian mouse deer has often made headlines due to numerous bushmeat hunting incidents.
