Wolves vs Liverpool Predictions

Liverpool just don’t look like they can start this season.

After winning their first two Premier League games after the 2022 World Cup, it looked like Jurgen Klopp’s side had reached a milestone.

A 2-1 win over Leicester City on December 30 left the Reds just two points clear of the top four. Champions League football was suddenly on the horizon again.

Just over a month later, however, Liverpool find themselves ninth in the table. They are just a point above the bottom half and 10 adrift of Manchester United in fourth.

The Reds still have one or two games to play on the teams above them, so there is still a slim chance of them qualifying for the Champions League.

But they just aren’t playing well enough right now for that to be a realistic goal.

Liverpool took a point from the last nine on offer, as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.

Klopp’s side can’t afford to draw or lose at Molineux, but they face a Wolves side who are also desperate for points.

One thing is certain: Liverpool won’t win on Saturday if they don’t deliver a much better performance.

Wolves vs Liverpool Predictions

Liverpool need to get back to basics as they look to climb the ladder, but Wolves are a much tougher proposition under Julen Lopetegui.

Liverpool win – 10/11 (Spreadex)

Liverpool are yet to win in the Premier League so far this year. They were outplayed, overtaken and beaten in defeats by Brentford and Brighton, before drawing 0-0 with Chelsea in their last top-flight encounter.

Even in this game, Liverpool were a shadow of their former selves. Chelsea have looked at the most likely winners at Anfield. They were the ones who pushed harder to score in the second half, not the home team.

Liverpool’s only win of 2023 came at Molineux. After a 2-2 draw in the first draw, Harvey Elliott’s goal earned Klopp’s side a 1-0 triumph in an FA Cup third round replay last month.

It was no vintage display of Liverpool, who had to dig deep to emerge victorious. Needless to say, Klopp would be delighted with another scrappy win this weekend.

It’s a measure of how far Liverpool have come that they are roughly available to beat a side that have lost more than half of their 20 matches this season.

That’s partly down to the progress Wolves have made under Lopetegui, who had an instant impact after replacing interim boss Steve Davis.

However, Liverpool still have plenty of quality in the ranks, and the relatively long odds make an away win tempting.

Under 2.5 goals – even (Spreadex)

It is well known that Wolves struggle to put the ball in the back of the net.

This was already a problem last season, when Bruno Lage’s men flirted with European qualifying.

Only the relegated trio of Burnley, Watford and Norwich City finished the campaign with worse attacking records.

This time around, no other team in the division have been as inefficient as Wolves at scoring goals.

Even Everton, whose profligacy is well documented, have won three more than the Black Country club.

There was a slight uptick under Lopetegui. Before taking the reins, Wolves averaged 0.53 goals per game. That’s gone down to 0.8 since the Spaniard started calling the shots.

Liverpool have also struggled in attack lately.

They have scored just once in their last 315 minutes of Premier League action. That rises to 369 minutes if you exclude Wout Faes’ two own goals in the 2-1 win over Leicester City in December.

Much like the FA Cup third round replay, this game is unlikely to be a thriller. One goal may be enough for either team to win it.

Mohamed Salah will score anytime – 11/10 (Spreadex)

The performance levels of virtually all Liverpool players have dropped since last season.

Unease has set in at Anfield and a squad that has served the club so well in recent years will likely need to be overhauled.

One stalwart who is sure to stick around is Mohamed Salah, who committed his future to Liverpool by signing a three-year contract extension last summer.

Salah hasn’t been at his best this season but he still scored 17 goals in 30 games in all competitions.

The Egypt international has admittedly been quiet lately, but unlike many other Liverpool attacking options, he’s virtually guaranteed to start as long as he’s fit.

It’s only a matter of time before Salah shoots again and the price of him finding the net anytime on Saturday is an attractive one.

Salah scored against Wolves in the 2-2 draw at Anfield in January, and he is still Liverpool’s designated penalty taker.

Wolves have a decent defensive record, but if they push down the field and leave space behind, Salah could punish them.

The Liverpool No.11 has been one of the most dangerous transitional forwards in the world in recent years. Dismiss it at your own risk.
