With -49 ° C, Western Siberia beats cold records – RT en français

Record freezing temperatures seen for the past 50 to 100 years were recorded this weekend in Western Siberia, exceeding minus 49 degrees Celsius.

Due to the exceptional cold in West Siberia, where the thermometer crossed the -49 ° C bar, the number of cases of frostbite is increasing, as well as that of accidents on the roads. Delays in air traffic and cancellations on public transport lines are also to be reported.

“Western Siberia has once again surprised climatologists. In Novosibirsk, weather stations recorded temperatures of -37 or even -41 ° C. This is 2 to 5 degrees cooler than previous records. Records were also broken on the weather stations of Kemerovo and Barnaul where temperatures fell below -40 ° C. In the Tomsk region, the lowest temperatures were recorded in the village of Tegouldet: -49 ° C. These are records for 50 to 100 years, ”said Renad Iagoudin, spokesperson for the Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring in Western Siberia, adding that, for example, the city of Barnaul broke the 1920 record.

Due to the unfavorable weather conditions some regions of Siberia have seen the setting up of the high alert regime, the emergency services, including the doctors, are working in reinforced mode. In the Novosibirsk region, for example, 33 people were treated by medical establishments for frostbite over the weekend. In the Kemerovo region, where frosts exceeded -47 ° C, more than 40 cases of frostbite were recorded in two days.

Transportation was also affected by these extreme temperatures. Between December 25 and December 28, the road services came to the aid of 40 drivers on federal roads in the Novosibirsk, Kemerovo and Omsk regions, the press service of the Siberian Road Administration reported on December 28. According to him, “the reason for the emergency stops was the freezing of diesel and poor quality fuel”. A car breakdown on a freeway in these weather conditions can be fatally dangerous for the driver and passengers. In the Tomsk region, more than a hundred bus lines have been canceled and some flights have been delayed due to the cold.
