Willem Dafoe Reveals Why He’s Open To A Return As The Green Goblin

Willem Dafoe has said he’s open to playing Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, again “if all goes well”.

Dafoe, who played the Green Goblin in the 2002 film “Spider-Man” and again in the 2021 film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” opened up about his feelings towards his iconic performance as the villain during an interview with Inverse published this week.

“I mean, it’s a great role,” Dafoe said.

“I liked that it was a dual role both times. Twenty years ago, and quite recently, both times [were] very different experiences, but I had a great time on both.

Dafoe, who stars in the recently released movie “Inside,” has been open about his love for the role in the past.

He told Vanity Fair in 2019 that he screen-tested for the role in “Spider-Man” from his hotel room in Spain.

“That’s how I got the role, I had to fight for it,” Dafoe said.

“My friends were like, ‘Really? You’re going to do an animated movie? Some of them snubbed it but I thought, ‘No, that’ll be cool, that’s interesting.’ Comic book movies weren’t a normal thing, it was like something new.

Dafoe, who was among a number of actors considered for the role including Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich, told GQ in 2019 that his “most interesting role” in “Spider-Man” was as a father.

“You could play these scenes where it would go from comedy to drama in a line,” said Dafoe, who referenced the Thanksgiving dinner scene.

“There are a few scenes that still make me laugh because they’re double-edged and they go back and forth between being really heavy and really silly. And the movie is full of that.
