Wijnadum explains why he didn’t sign in 2019

In an interview with L’Equipe, Georginio Wijnadum (30) admitted to having been approached by PSG in 2015. But he had not felt a very strong seduction from the Parisian club that he finally joined this summer.

The story between PSG and Georginio Wijnadum could have started long before this summer. In an interview with L’Equipe, the Dutch midfielder, who arrived free this summer after leaving Liverpool, said he was approached by the French club in 2015. But the feeling was different.

“I did not feel a real desire to be signed”

“In fact, the first contacts date back to 2014, after the World Cup, he says. PSG had tried to get me to come but I wanted to stay at PSV Eindhoven for at least another year to try to be Dutch champion before leaving. I also wanted to stay with Memphis (Depay). I had been injured for a long time the previous season and I felt a bit indebted to the club and the supporters. I stayed and we were champions. Afterwards, I was more open to the idea of leaving and Paris came back. But at that time I didn’t feel a real urge to get signed. I chose to go to Newcastle (2015-2016), which really wanted me and made it clear to me. “

He then joined Liverpool (2016-2021) where he took part in writing part of the club’s history with a Champions League (2019) and the first English league title in 30 years (2020). At the end of his contract last summer, he was courted by Barça, which he liked. He finally gave his preference to PSG.

“Barcelona have come,” he says. I was really happy because from a very young age, as for the majority of Dutch players, it was the club of my dreams even if I must admit that my idol was Zinedine Zidane, a Real Madrid player (he laughs). I really had a good feeling about signing up with Barça. But the negotiations lasted a very long time and Paris arrived. Unlike six years earlier, the club showed me its desire to recruit me. It was time for me to see something else. “

His discussions with Mauricio Pochettino, Leonardo and Nasser Al-Khelaïfi finally convinced him, despite the interests of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. “Paris went very quickly in the negotiations”, he confides. Before signing, the midfielder regularly confided in Memphis Depay, to whom he is very close. “Memphis knew everything,” he smiles. But he did not try to encourage him to join him at FC Barcelona where the former Lyonnais signed this summer.
