Why Mate Rimac is working on an electric axis robot – TechCrunch

Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of Croatian electric hypercar and developer of Rimac Automobili components, set up a separate company almost three years ago to work on electric robots.

Little is known about the company, which still operates on a stealth basis. Rimac told TechCrunch this week during the TC: Mobility 2021 sessions that he hopes to keep this separate society a secret until the team is ready to show what they are working on.

Rimac provided some details on what he described as an electric robot company. He said the company has offices in Croatia and the UK and may expand to other locations. Rimac also said the company intends to be a global operator and expects to reveal what the team has been working on early next year.

“Why the stealth mode? Rimac asked during the interview. “Because there’s so much hot air in this industry, and so many PowerPoint companies, you know, are doing big things and not delivering and so on. We didn’t want to be that company, we wanted to do a lot of things – and as a sub-promise, over-deliver. “

Few people knew about the company’s existence until last month, when local media uncovered a file from the Croatian Transport Ministry describing a project proposal involving an urban mobility ecosystem using autonomous electric vehicles. While Rimac noted that it was an unfortunate discovery, he wants to reveal their work properly.

“People see us as the hypercar business,” Rimac said, noting that the business is seen as a business focused on very high net worth individuals. (Indeed, Rimac Automobili has unveiled a production version of its Concept 2 vehicle. The renowned Nevera is priced at $ 2.44 million.) “We have a lot of other things to prepare and have a longer perspective. term. I think the new mobility will really be a change in society. Just like phones haven’t just changed the phone industry. Apple has not only disrupted Nokia, it has changed our lives. I think the next big change we will have will be mobility.

Rimac did not give details on the autonomous driving system, sensors or design of the vehicle.

“We think a lot of people miss the big picture and focus on some of the building blocks, like the autonomous driving system itself,” he said. “We believe that maybe it isn’t the differentiator itself, that there are other differentiators within the autonomous mobility ecosystem.”

Rimac later added that the robotaxi user experience is an area he focuses on and believes it may be different from what others are developing.
