Premier League champions Manchester City will renew their rivalry with FA Cup winners Liverpool in the Community Shield this weekend.
City have won the traditional curtain-raiser six times but lost 1-0 in last year’s pre-season showdown against Leicester at Wembley.
Pep Guardiola’s side will now be looking to establish an early marker over their rivals for the Premier League title.
Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to finally win the Community Shield after losing in his previous two attempts against City and Arsenal.
But why doesn’t the annual showdown take place at Wembley? talkSPORT.com has you covered…
Leicester’s King Power Stadium will host this season’s Community Shield as Wembley will not be available on the weekend of the match.
The showpiece event on Saturday July 30 will be played away from the National Stadium for the first time in ten years, as Wembley host the Women’s Euro 2022 final between England and Germany the following day.
The Premier League is set to start a week earlier than usual this season due to Qatar’s World Cup winter break, meaning the Community Shield will take place in the unusual late July slot.
Emirates Stadium and London Stadium have both shown interest in keeping the game in London, but their efforts have been rebuffed.
Many welcomed the decision to hold it at Leicester, especially Liverpool and Man City fans after the travel difficulties that followed the two sets of supporters in April’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Fans were left reeling after direct train services to London were canceled on the weekend of the clash, resulting in thousands of empty seats on the show.
In 2012, Villa Park became the last ground other than Wembley to host the game as Wembley was being used for the London Olympics.
Aston Villa were hoping to host the clash again this summer but failed to beat Leicester to the punch.
Leicester are the current holders of the Community Shield after beating City at the start of last season with an 89th-minute penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho.
