Hello and welcome to Equity, a podcast about startup activity, where we unpack the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.
It was a week live on the podcast, which means Mary Ann and Alex and Natasha and Grace teamed up with our mothership Yahoo’s excellent AVs to not only tape the show, but to do it in front, well, all of you! It’s fun to record live, and we’ll do it again in two weeks!
What have we gotten ourselves into? What follows:
- Offers of the week: HomeLister wants to make selling your home a do-it-yourself and cheaper affair; The Degreed co-founder is returning to the company he helped found, via another company he helped found; and may chat bots not suck in the future?
- Coalition: What happens when you come across a small venture capital fund, a large network of operators, and a shared upside? The coalition wants to find out.
- Dismissals: Backstage has cut its staff faster, while we’ve seen smaller reductions at Substack this week in percentage terms. Both rounds of firings were jumping-off points for questions and discussions on the show.
- Robin Hood: Will the company, struggling with a rock bottom stock price and declining consumer mind-share, sell?
Equity is turned off on Mondays for the holidays, but returns three times over the next four days. Chat then!
