What’s new on (and leaving) Netflix in May 2021

After a rather soft April slate, Netflix enters the summer blockbuster season in May, filling its schedule of original movie releases, high-profile pandemic acquisitions, and long-awaited new seasons of a few of its most popular series (or at least a few). ones with vocal online fanbases) – we see you, Castlevania stans). Will it be enough to help the streamer recover part of its eroding market share? Only time will tell. (But probably not.)

Most of the attention, at least online, will go to Army of the dead, the next film by internet martyr Zack Snyder (Justice League by Zack Snyder), which appears to be doing its best to breathe new life into two tired genres by marrying them together: the heist movie and the zombie thriller, set in Vegas, just for good measure. Call it “Ocean’s Undead, ” with Dave Bautista leading a bizarre team of mercenaries (including comedian Tig Notaro in a truly inspired cast) as they enter the Quarantined Zombie-filled City of Second Chances to steal a few billion dollars lost in casino chests. Because the money will totally be worth something in the midst of the zombie apocalypse. Yep, that’s nitpicking, because the trailer makes it really fun.

The second biggest new “Netflix Movie” isn’t a Netflix movie at all – the streamer has acquired The woman at the window (May 14) from 20th Century Studios after its release was ruled out of the 2020 schedule due to, well, you know. Amy Adams’ star vehicle was already a troubled production: it is based on a bestselling novel by pseudonymous author AJ Finn, which was almost canceled a few years ago for his strange behavior while working in the New York edition; and despite the presence of director Joe Wright (Atonement) and a screenplay by Pulitzer-winning playwright Tracy Letts, the film endured long revisions after poor drug tests. Still, all the movies that hit the box two years later than originally planned aren’t a disaster, right?

Another movie to note: Oxygen (May 12), a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller by horror filmmaker Alexandre Aja in which a woman (Mélanie Laurent) wakes up in a futuristic cryogenic chamber and must rely on the presence of an invisible voice in her ears to survive , and I hope (for me, at least; I do do not like enclosed spaces) escape. It sounds intense, but I’m very intrigued that it was originally designed as a vehicle for … Anne Hathaway?

Netflix is also releasing another high profile comic book adaptation to join Umbrella Academy. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar (Kick ass), Jupiter’s legacy is one of those revisionist things that “reexamine the place of costumed heroes in popular culture,” which means you can probably expect a lot of gore and swear words. I do appreciate the dedication to the wacky Silver Age-style costumes though; you can see what i mean in the trailer.

Otherwise, yeah, we’re finally getting another season of the anime-influenced video game adaptation. Castlevania, and more Selena, garbage truck, and I love death + robots. It’s almost like Netflix doesn’t want you to come out this summer at all.
