Washington Spirit pick Trinity Rodman doesn’t want to be ‘known as Dennis Rodman’s daughter’

Trinity Rodman has said she doesn’t want to be defined only by her famous father after being selected second overall by the Washington Spirit in the NWSL Draft.

The US Youth International is the daughter of former NBA Champion Dennis Rodman, but she is determined to step out of her shadow as she begins her own career in professional sports.

“[Being a professional] has been my dream forever, so it’s unreal to me, “Rodman said after his selection.” The one thing I’m most excited about is just learning from this. [At] professionally you will learn more than you can well, really, but I can’t wait to learn.

“With my dad I’m so grateful, obviously he was an amazing athlete and got these genes from him, but I’m so glad to be known as Trinity Rodman and not just Dennis’ daughter. Rodman, so I’m excited to be making my own way and getting better on this journey. “

Rodman was due to travel to Washington state and play the fall season, but the coronavirus pandemic has meant the season has been moved to spring.

Rather than wait for spring, the young American international striker decided to get a head start on her professional career and declare herself for the draft before playing a single minute in college.

“Washington state is a great school, great staff, great people. I fell in love as soon as I got there, but I think when Covid hit the environment I just felt stuck in a certain way, ”Rodman explained.

“Obviously, the professional level is a higher level [than college] and I know I’m at a point where I could be at that level to be even better than I would be in college, so I was kind of like, ‘let’s go, I wanna get better. Let’s go. ‘”

With the first pick in Wednesday night’s draft, expansion Racing Louisville franchise picked Emily Fox of the University of North Carolina. Fox’s college teammate Brianna Pinto completed the top three when Sky Blue FC picked her.
