Widdop won 20 points for Warrington

Steve Price said England’s loss was Warrington’s gain after Gareth Widdop played for Wolves, missing the national team selection for Friday’s clash against the United Nations All Stars at home.

Widdop picked up a personal total of 20 points to help an understaffed Wolves side to a 44-18 Betfred Super League win over Leigh without a win.

The half-back won an encore to Shaun Wane’s England squad earlier this month, but failed to advance to Friday night’s game at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington.

But the 32-year-old produced the goods for his club, scoring one try, creating another for winger Josh Charnley and scoring eight goals. Blake Austin, Danny Walker, Eribe Doro, Matt Davis and Tom Lineham also landed for the hosts.

Wolves boss Price said: “It’s a shame Gareth wasn’t picked, but from our perspective losing England was our win.

“I was surprised that he was not selected for England, as I have always said, I think he is the best player in the competition.

“I know how hard Gaz worked to get himself into this position and he plays great football for our club.

“Gareth will have scans of his ankle tomorrow as we’re not entirely sure how extensive the injury is, but that’s part of the game.”

Warrington was without five key players who will be on duty in England at Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday and fit center Toby King was also sidelined with a knee injury as Price was forced to make the changes after his victory over the champions of St Helens.

Wolves have recalled Riley Dean and Ellis Robson from their loan spells at York and Bradford respectively and have also brought in other youngsters Josh Thewlis, Connor Wrench, Ellis Longstaff and Doro.

And Price was thrilled with how his young players have adjusted, adding: “It was a great result, there was great intention, great energy and a lot of adaptability which was nice.

“The future is very bright for this club and it is in great shape with the exciting young children arriving.

“I want them to give me selection headaches and I want pressure. Every day in training I want pressure.”

Leigh’s interim head coach Kurt Haggerty has said his side “will not give up the fight” after their 12th straight Super League loss leaves them at the bottom of the table.

Haggerty said: “It’s hard to keep the guys up every week and this group won’t give up on the fight, but we have to win some great moments and build momentum.

“We did some good things but lost the key moments and Warrington’s handling of the game and the end of the sets was fantastic.

“I still felt we were in the game and we could come back and win after the try at the start of the second half, but we just lost those key moments and we didn’t recover from the changes in momentum . “

Haggerty reported that forward Tyrone McCarthy was eliminated after a fierce clash with Sitaleki Akauola after just four minutes, which forced the former Warrington man off the field.

He added: “Tyrone is in a very bad place after an unpleasant clash and we will continue to monitor him to make sure he is okay.”
