War in Ukraine: Zelensky says Moscow ‘destroyed Bakhmut’

Russian forces have turned the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine into rubble, the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

Zelenskyy said the situation “remains very difficult” in several frontline towns in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk provinces.

“Bakhmut, Soledar, Maryinka, Kreminna. For a long time there was no living place in these areas that was not damaged by shells and fires,” Zelenskyy said.

“The occupiers actually destroyed Bakhmut, another city in Donbass, which the Russian army turned into burnt ruins.”

Fighting intensified around Bakhmut after Ukrainian forces recaptured the city of Kherson nearly a month ago.

Capture of Bakhmut would disrupt Ukraine’s supply lines and could open a new route for Russian forces to move towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the main Ukrainian strongholds.
