Walmart apologizes for releasing Juneteenth ice cream

walmartThe Great Value range of recently launched a June 19-themed ice cream, which was not well received by consumers. The product, branded “Celebration Edition: Juneteenth Ice Cream”, was decorated in Pan-African colors and described on the label as swirling red velvet and cheesecake. The frozen desert tag read, “Share and celebrate African-American culture, empowerment and enduring hope.”

Follow the backlash online – with a Twitter user saying, “Nobody asked for Juneteenth ice cream. Not a single person.” – the retail store released a statement to E! News apologizing for the treat. (After all, as a user slammedthat’s “why it’s important to hire diverse perspectives”.)

“The June 16 holiday marks a celebration of freedom and independence,” Walmart said. “However, we have received comments that a few items have caused some of our customers concern and we sincerely apologize for this. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate.”

Amid criticism, some are using the viral moment to encourage shoppers to buy from black-owned businesses instead.
