Waitrose aims to eliminate 40 million single-use plastic bags per year by removing them from in-store deliveries and collections.
The “Lifetime Bags”, which cost 10p, will also be taken out of all department stores and replaced with a 50p reusable bag that is said to be twice as durable, made from recycled materials and fully recyclable.
The company said its research found that 10p bags were increasingly used once and not multiple times as intended.
The change will take effect from September 27, the same day home deliveries will be permitted again.
If they wish, customers will always have the option of bringing their own groceries home from the crates provided, or having them delivered to their door by the delivery driver.
