Waffle maker recalled in Canada due to burn hazard.

The risk of consumers being struck by pieces of burning waffles prompted Health Canada to issue a recall for one particular waffle maker.
A recall was issued last week for the PowerXL 5-inch Stuffed Waffle Maker due to a burn hazard.
Over 350,000 units were sold in the United States, while 777 units were sold in Canada.
“Hot pieces of the waffle or filling may be expelled from the waffle maker during use or when opening the product, posing a burn hazard to consumers,” the recall states.
The problem is caused by a problem with the locking mechanism when the waffle maker is overfilled, according to the company behind the product. If there are too many waffles inside the waffle maker, pressure buildup inside the product may cause hot waffle pieces to shoot out of the waffle maker when unlocked.
Empower Brands, which co-issued the recall with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, received 44 customer incident reports in the U.S., including 34 burn injuries. A total of three people suffered injuries serious enough to seek medical attention.
So far, no injuries have been reported in Canada.
The specific models affected are ESWM02 and ESWM03. Health Canada’s recall only affects the 5-inch ESW02. Consumers can verify if they have an affected model by finding the model number on the rating label on a tab on the power cord.
Affected customers should immediately stop using their waffle maker and can contact Empower Brands to receive a free latch adapter part and instructions on how to repair the waffle maker.
The affected units were sold in Canada from July 2021 to October 2022 and were distributed by Tristar Products Inc. and Spectrum Brands Canada, Inc.
The waffle irons are available in 11 colors, three of which were sold in Canada: black, cinnamon and slate.
