Vladimir Pozner and the novel of the “Retirada”

In 1965, as Franco’s regime entered its last decade, Vladimir Pozner wrote “Spain’s first love”, a novel inspired by the exodus of Spanish Republicans to France in 1939. Fable of mad love, testimony to a great sharpness on the fate of refugees and nourished reflection on the commitment of the author in time of war, this novel is as much a sentimental education as a political one. A timely reissue.
