A video taken by a park goer shows the terrifying moment a 10-metre-high (about 32ft) waterslide collapsed, sending several people crashing to the ground.
In a 17-second clip of the incident, which was shared on facebook by Indonesian news outlet Noodou, portions of the waterslide can be seen falling to the ground accompanied by a torrent of water. Several victims scream as they crash to the ground, as a crowd of people rush to help them.
The Incident performed on May 7 at Kenjeran Park located in Surabaya, Indonesia.
It was initially reported that nine people fell from the slide when it collapsed, including a child with a head injury; however, later reports revealed that 16 people, mostly children, suffered injuries and at least three suffered broken bones. No deaths have been reported.
While Indonesian media reported that the collapse could have happened as a result of prolonged use of the waterslide, a park spokesperson later contradicted this speculation, stating that the ride had been regularly maintained and that scheduled maintenance had been carried out nine months prior to the incident. He estimates that the slide, with a maximum capacity of 5 to 10 people, had been overloaded.
The incident is currently under investigation and the amusement park was closed the following day. Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said the park management would be held responsible for the accident and medical compensation for the victims.
“The Surabaya city government will provide trauma healing assistance which will be carried out by the offices to all the victims,” Cahyadi said per daily star. “They are accompanied until full recovery.”
Deputy Mayor of Surabaya Armuji also called for all other amusement parks in the East Java capital to be inspected immediately to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future.
