VIDEO: Halloween crush in South Korea: emergency services evacuate victims

South Korean officials have said a stampede in Seoul that killed more than 150 people and injured many more is likely to raise serious questions about public safety standards.

Fire chief Choi Seong-beom said the stampede took place around 10:22 p.m. and many victims were crushed to death.

“The high number of casualties is the result of many being trampled during the Halloween event,” Choi said.

The Itaewon district is a popular destination for people celebrating Halloween in the South Korean capital.

President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered an investigation and declared a period of national mourning.

French President Emmanuel Macron offered France’s “sincere” support for South Korea in a tweet that read, “sincere thoughts for the people of Seoul and the Korean people after the Itaewon tragedy. France is at your side.
