Survivors of sexual assault – mostly male – by the late sports physician Dr. Robert Anderson will collectively receive $490 million in compensation from the University of Michigan. The university announced that 1,050 people will share the financial settlement.

Victims and their attorneys will decide how to divide the $460 million, with the remaining $30 million set aside for future claims through July 31, 2022. The case is considered one of the most significant concerning sexual exploitation by one person in American history.

The settlement was reached Tuesday after more than 15 months of mediation beginning in October 2020 between the victims and the university. Mary Sue Coleman, acting president of the University of Michigan, called it “one of many critical steps the university has taken to improve survivor support and more effectively prevent and address misconduct.”

Tad Deluca, a wrestler whose complaint letter against Anderson in 2018 sparked an investigation, offered another perspective. In a phone interview with The Associated Press, he expressed concern that the settlement would leave other issues unaddressed.

“The settlement is going to cover things up so Michigan can get back to a shiny ‘M’ block and be great for the world,” said Deluca, referring to the university’s logo.

Anderson worked at the University of Michigan from 1966 until his retirement in 2003. He was director of the university’s health service and physician to several sports teams. In 2020, the university revealed it was investigating multiple abuse allegations against Anderson, who died in 2008. The lawsuits accuse the university of failing to fire him despite multiple complaints.

A report from a law firm hired by the university shows that staff had many opportunities to intervene during Anderson’s career but repeatedly missed opportunities to stop his misconduct, despite complaints and rumors circulating among the students.
