Moscow’s US envoy says Washington is seeking to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on Russia by using Ukraine as a ‘proxy’
All US battle tanks sent to Ukraine will be destroyed by Russian forces, Moscow’s ambassador to the US has warned, after news reports that the White House now plans to supply kyiv with heavy armor despite its refusals previous ones.
Asked about the potential shipment of the M1 Abrams main battle tank to Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said the move would only intensify American involvement in the conflict and will far beyond the offer “defensive weapons”.
“If the decision to transfer M1 Abrams to kyiv is made, American tanks will undoubtedly be destroyed, as [with] all other samples of NATO military equipment,” the envoy said, adding that “The Americans are constantly raising the ‘bar’ of military assistance to their puppet government.”
Although the White House had previously rejected kyiv’s requests for the M1 Abrams – which was on a Christmas “wish list” circulated by Ukrainian officials over the holidays – on Tuesday, several news outlets reported that Washington had made a move. back and now intended to send the weapon after all. An announcement could come as early as this week, according to reports.
While the Pentagon had argued that the Abrams was expensive to operate and maintain, and could take years to reach the battlefield, officials now believe it is necessary to agree to supply the vehicle. in order to persuade Germany to allow deliveries of its own Leopard 2 battle tank, according to The New York Times. The Leopard is used by several European armies, with around 2,000 units stationed across the continent, although Berlin must authorize their re-export to any third country.
Ambassador Antonov noted that US officials frequently preview information in the press before confirming it on file, suggesting Tuesday’s reports of the M1 Abrams were another example of a deliberate leak. He added that Washington is using Ukraine as a “Proxy” in order to “inflict a strategic defeat on us”, claiming that the United States was the real instigator of hostilities.
“If the United States decides to provide tanks, it will be impossible to justify such a step using arguments about “defensive weapons”. This would be another blatant provocation against the Russian Federation,” he added. he said. “No one should have any illusions about who is the real aggressor in the current conflict.”
Western tanks will not be a game changer in Ukraine – Kremlin
Moscow has repeatedly called against Western intervention in the conflict, arguing that the flow of military equipment pouring into Ukraine has only prolonged the fighting and made a negotiated settlement impossible. Nevertheless, the Kremlin declared that no foreign largesse would prevent it from achieving its goals and promised that all NATO weapons sent to Ukraine would be “burn.”
