Mackenzie Hughes was the recipient of an unfortunate break of the 11th par-three tee, as his ball bounced off the cart path into a tree!

Mackenzie Hughes suffered one of the strangest moments of doom in major history when his ball got lodged in a tree halfway through the final round of the US Open.

Hughes was tied for the lead overnight, but struggled under the pressure of playing in Sunday’s final duo at Torrey Pines, dropping shots at three of the first six holes.

But the Canadian returned to the race with birdies in the seventh and ninth and was only two minutes behind leader Louis Oosthuizen when he failed on the 11th par-3.

Hughes dropped and kicked his club in disgust after firing his tee shot to the left, but you had to see what happened to his ball to be believed, and spectators gathered at the foot of a tree and took pictures in the branches confirmed where his bullet ended up.

Then, slow-motion reruns revealed how unlucky he was. His bullet first found a way through the tree, but made a big jump out of the path of the wagon below and bounced straight into the branches.

An enraged Hughes struggled to identify his ball before taking his penalty, although the crowd upped the mood with chants of “shake that tree”!
