The United States needs a new anti-war movement to “see through the hypocrisy and lies of the mainstream media that try to justify wars”, said Richard Becker, author of “Palestine, Israel and American Empire”.

As March 20 marks the 20th anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq under the false pretense of Baghdad’s alleged development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), there are vital lessons to be learned. of the Iraq war by all anti-war activists, Richard Becker told Sputnik’s By Any Means Necessary hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman. It is important to mark the anniversary of the war in Iraq by calling for peace in the ongoing proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, said Richard Becker, adding: Becker, The author of Palestine, Israel and the US Empire, agreed with host Sean Blackmon that the Iraq War was, in fact, the last great period of anti-war organizing in the United States. But now massive protests are sweeping the United States, demanding peace in Ukraine and protesting against further escalation and fueling the conflagration by bombarding the Kiev regime with weapons. the workers, the population as a whole… Public opinion polls are interesting, but they are not significant in terms of real change. Real change happens when people are organized and they are organized to take action,” Becker, who is also the West Coast Coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition, noted. Reflecting on the start of the invasion of Iraq, he pointed out that it was obvious that the United States was on the road to war from the moment George W. Bush took office in January 2001. But the truth was that Iraq was a devastated country, its infrastructure destroyed in the 1991 war, and with sanctions preventing it from rebuilding, he added. Of course, everyone knows the key role played at the time by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, who testified at the United Nations to claim that Iraq was trying to obtain nuclear technology and preparing to launch a nuclear war against the United States unless Washington intervened militarily. Now, 20 years after the start of the devastating war in Iraq, and while Washington seems quite satisfied with the way the proxy war is progressing in Ukraine, it is important to reinvigorate the anti-war and anti-imperialist movement, according to Richard Becker. It should be built on a principled basis, “anti-imperialist and anti-racist, opposed to all forms of bigotry and oppression”. As for the marches and rallies taking place at the White House, San Francisco and 15 other cities, they are laying the groundwork, Becker said, adding:

There is an urgent need to form a new anti-war movement in the United States based on anti-imperialist and anti-racist principles, believes Richard Becker, author of Palestine, Israel and the American Empire, especially if there is to be a l hope to end the ongoing proxy war against Russia in Ukraine.
“There must be a new anti-war movement, and it must see through the hypocrisy, the lies, the cynicism of the propaganda that comes from the mainstream media to justify these wars.”
“It is the action of the people that will bring about any type of progressive change that benefits the working people, the people as a whole… Public opinion polls are interesting, but they are not meaningful in terms of real change Real change happens when people are organized and they are organized to take action,” noted Becker, who is also the West Coast Coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition.
“Those dedicated to the war there … unveiled a new strategy to win over public opinion, to convince the people of the United States that Iraq had or soon would have nuclear weapons. Iraq has been presented by people like Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, George W. Bush, Richard Cheney as a danger, a new hostile nuclear power,” said Richard Becker.
But the truth is that Iraq is a devastated country, its infrastructure destroyed in the 1991 war and sanctions preventing it from rebuilding, he added.

As for the marches and rallies taking place at the White House, San Francisco and 15 other cities, they are laying the groundwork, Becker said, adding:
“We hope this is the beginning of the new anti-war movement which has these characteristics of being anti-racist, anti-imperialist and serving the needs of the people, not the war machine.”
