“A unit from the United States Marine Corps 2nd Marine Logistics Group will come to Finland to train with Finnish units. They will train with the Nyland Brigade from October through early December,” the Navy said. in a press release. US Marines will arrive in Finland early next week. In recent months, cooperation between the Finnish and US navies has intensified. Military drills held in May and August improved unit interoperability and familiarized U.S. forces with the Finnish coastal environment, according to the Navy. On May 18, three months after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine, Finland and Sweden submitted its applications for NATO membership, abandoning decades of neutrality. Finland and Sweden are awaiting ratification of their NATO candidacy. As of September 23, 27 out of 30 countries have already completed the formal procedure to welcome Finland and Sweden into the alliance. The requests have not yet been ratified by Slovakia, Turkey and Hungary. Moscow has repeatedly declared that NATO is a confrontational alliance. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in early April that further eastward expansion of the alliance was aggressive in nature and would not make Europe safer. At the same time, he noted that the Kremlin does not consider Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO membership as an existential threat to Russia.
