US healthcare system and state of democracy viewed negatively abroad – POLITICO

US healthcare systems, including their handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s state of democracy, are viewed negatively abroad, according to latest Pew Research Center report published Monday.

The survey, conducted in 17 advanced economies with 18,850 respondents, shows that America’s healthcare system is perceived as below average or worse among developed countries, and very few respondents believe that democracy America, in its current state, serves as a good model for other nations.

Among the results, a median of 48% said the U.S. healthcare system is below average, while 18% see it as the worst among developed countries. Previous Pew polls have also suggested that non-Americans are largely critical of how the United States has handled the COVID-19 pandemic. Two in 10 people in Australia, Belgium, Spain, UK, France, Germany, New Zealand and Sweden said US healthcare is the worst among developed countries. Only in Taiwan, Greece, Japan and Singapore do at least a quarter describe it as above average or the best.

In addition to this, many respondents expressed significant doubts about the health of American democracy: only 17% think democracy in the United States is a good model for other nations, while 57% think it was. a good example, but has not been in the last few years. Americans also widely question the state of their own democracy – 72% said their democracy was a good example, but no longer is.

The survey showed that people generally say the United States respects individual freedoms better than it did in 2018 under former President Donald Trump. However, in many countries the United States still scores more negatively on this issue today than it did during Barack Obama’s time in the White House.

Among other findings, the report concludes that the United States is viewed negatively in advanced economies for issues of discrimination, while it is viewed positively for its technology, entertainment, military, and universities.
