US and South Korea retaliate against North — RT World News

Washington and Seoul made shows of force in response to Pyongyang’s latest missile test

The United States and South Korea mobilized warplanes and fired several surface-to-surface missiles following the North’s latest weapons test, which saw three projectiles launched into the ocean.

The Seoul military mobilized about 30 F-15 fighter jets and fired a Hyunmoo-II missile in the East Sea, its Joint Chiefs of Staff said, as quoted by Yonhap, while US forces fired a Army’s MGM-140 Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) heading in the same direction, both in retaliation for Pyongyang’s round of missile tests on Wednesday morning.

South Korean chiefs of staff also admitted that a similar “Elephant Walk” exercise involving a number of new F-35 fighters had been carried out the day before Pyongyang’s last test to “deter ballistic missile provocations.”

President Yoon Suk-yeol’s office harshly denounced the Pyongyang test – which involved at least three projectiles, including what was believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – calling it a “serious provocation that violates UN Security Council resolutions, increases tensions on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia and threatens international peace.”

Yoon also ordered “measures for the activation of extended deterrence and the strengthening of the combined South Korea-United States defense posture” and to improve Seoul’s military readiness.

Pyongyang’s 17th missile test this year came shortly after US President Joe Biden left Japan for Washington after his first official visit to Asia, which lasted five days.

Officials in Seoul say the alleged ICBM traveled about 224 miles (360 km) and reached an altitude of 335 miles (540 km). Japan also detected the launch, reporting that a missile flew into a “irregular trajectory” for a distance of about 466 miles (750 km), while the country’s defense chief said he landed just outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
