The Malian prospect has shown signs of what is to come after impressing in the Reds’ pre-season fixtures against VFB Stuttgart and Wacker Innsbruck
Ibrahima Konate described her first appearance for Liverpool as “an unforgettable moment” as the Reds tried VFB Stuttgart for size in a friendly on Tuesday.
The former French junior international of Malian descent has joined the Reds for a £ 36million ($ 50million) transfer to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
The 22-year-old center-back bowed as the English played a 1-1 draw against the Germans in the elite division, just at the end of their previous meeting with Wacker Innsbruck.
Talk through his club’s website, the Malian hopeful expressed his joy after playing his first match for the 19-time champions of England.
“Yes, I am very happy. It’s an unforgettable moment for me, ”said Konate.
“Yes, without our fans – but I’m very, very happy. Just a little sad – very sad – because we didn’t win. But it’s okay, I’m happy.
“I was very happy with the team on the pitch; good communication with everyone.
“Little by little, we will be better, this is the first time in the pre-season. We are waiting for the next game.
As they continue their preparations for the 2021-22 campaign, Jurgen Klopp’s side face Mainz 05 in their next meeting on Friday.
This showdown is expected to be watched by up to 3,500 fans at the Untersberg-Arena in Grodig.
“Of course, this is the best,” he continued. “[It has been] for a very long time with the Covid situation, it was very bad for everyone in the world.
“And for footballers, very sad when you play without your fans.
“Now I think it will be a new level with the fans because the fans were sad not to be here with us. And it will be very, very important for us.
Konate has extensive experience in top-level football after four inspiring years at RB Leipzig – a team he represented in the Champions League semi-finals under Julian Nagelsmann.
Klopp is hoping he can bring out the best in the defender as well as the Reds look to fight for top honors again when the new season begins.
They begin their campaign with an opener against newly promoted Norwich City on August 14.
