Tyson Fury’s preparations for Deontay Wilder took an unorthodox turn the day before they first met in 2018.
Having only had two comeback fights, the “Gypsy King” embarked on a challenge for the world title with the WBC champion in his own country.
Many felt that the Briton was unhappy not to get the decision, despite two reversals.
But Fury has since revealed to WBC Talks, “When I was boxing Deontay Wilder in Los Angeles, 2018, it was the night before the fight.
“I had this urge to go downstairs and have a beer.
So I thought, ‘You know what, I’m fighting for the heavyweight world championship, my body tells me I want a beer, I’m going to go down and have one.
“I called my boyfriend who is organizing things for me – Tim.
“I said, ‘Tim, meet me downstairs in five minutes at the bar.’
“What did he say?’
“I said, ‘Tim, meet me downstairs in five minutes.’
“I go downstairs and have two beers, one for myself, one for my mate, Tim.
“He said, ‘What are you doing, you’re fighting for the world heavyweight championship tomorrow night.’
“I was like, ‘Look, the old greats, they had brandy and used to get drunk without a bag before the championship fights.’
“So I thought, ‘If I can’t drink beer, I’ll be right.’
“I ended up drinking a beer, I felt good, I went to bed, I had an early night.
“And I felt good the next day and I fought well.”
When they met 14 months later in the rematch, a perfectly fit and perfectly sober Fury knocked out Wilder in seven rounds and they are now ready to fight for the third time.
