Tyson Fury ‘knows deep in his heart’ that Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and previous heavyweights would ‘eat him for dinner’, says Frank Bruno

Frank Bruno insisted giants of his generation would ‘eat Tyson Fury for dinner’ and said ‘Gypsy King’ ‘lives on a different cloud’.

Bruno won the WBC world heavyweight title at a time when he had to face a gauntlet of challengers and champions, including Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Oliver McCall and even Joe Bugner.

Fury and Wilder’s third fight was an instant classic

The Wandsworth hero endeared himself to British audiences with his massive heart and desire to win, traits that ultimately led him to success against McCall at Wembley in 1995.

It was not to last for Bruno as he handed over the green and gold strap to Tyson in their rematch in 1996, retiring shortly thereafter.

Fury currently holds the WBC title and is set to make his second defense against Dillian Whyte live on talkSPORT on April 23, after knocking out Deontay Wilder in October.

Still, Bruno believes the 33-year-old has enjoyed a much smoother journey to the top than he should have faced in previous years.

At 5″10, Tyson was a beast at his peak capable of knocking out much bigger men as he reigned as undisputed king in the heavyweight division.

“It’s a good fight, Dillian Whyte is very powerful,” Bruno told DAZN. “Tyson Fury is dangerous and can box.

“What he learned, Dillian Whyte wouldn’t know, it would break him. Yes [Whyte] hits Fury, he will hit the ground.

“Tyson Fury is going to show him some moves and upset him. He knows how to adapt. If you’re left-handed he can left-handed, if you dig deep he can dig deep.

“He fought the most dangerous man on the planet, Deontay Wilder, who threw his toys out of the pram.”

The 1993 fight between Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno featured two Britons fighting for a world heavyweight title for the first time in history

However, he cautioned Fury against any idea that he would think of himself as an all-time great.

Bruno added: “He knows deep in his heart that if he was there in my day they would eat him for dinner.

“I’m not going to sit here and disrespect him, but we’re talking about a different time. He lives on a different cloud than I was on.

“He is number one, he deserves to be number one. I have a lot of respect for him.”
