The men had intervened to try to prevent a woman from being “inappropriately touched”, according to reports.
One of the men had to undergo facial reconstruction after the attack and remains in hospital.

Two British men have been beaten unconscious after apparently intervening to prevent a woman from being sexually assaulted last Sunday morning.
The couple, 19 and 25, stepped in to help women who were “in distress” after one was “inappropriately touched” in Stoke-on-Trent, MailOnline and StokeonTrentLive reported .
Local media reported that one of the two men, 25, had to undergo facial reconstruction after the woman’s assailants attacked him. He stays in the hospital.
The 19-year-old victim has since been discharged from Royal Stoke University Hospital, StokeonTrentLive said.
The British media have dubbed the “heroes” for their valiant attempt to protect the woman.

Friends and relatives praised the young men.

The first reports indicated that the men intervened to prevent the rape. There was, however, an “allegation that a woman was inappropriately touched,” the spokesperson said.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, sexual assault occurs when a person is coerced or physically forced into engagement against their will, or when a person touches another person sexually without their consent. Touch can be done with any part of the body or with an object.
Police intentionally arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on Thursday. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation.
Officers are now trying to identify another man they wish to speak to in the attack.
