Two dead as French army clashes with protesters in Africa – RT World News

At least two people were killed and some 16 injured in Niger, when a French military convoy was encountered by protesters after passing through Burkina Faso, where the column had been stranded for a whole week.

The French military convoy, which was redeploying from Côte d’Ivoire to Mali, encountered new demonstrations on Saturday. Shortly after crossing Niger from neighboring Burkina Faso, it was stranded by angry residents within 30 km (19 miles) of the border.

Footage from the scene circulating online shows a crowd of protesters standing in the middle of a road, with several armored vehicles and logistics trucks seen in the background. Thick clouds of black smoke rose from a burning barricade across the road.

Protesters expressed anger at the continued French military presence, shouting “Down with France! The French soldiers had to lay off “Warning shots” to repel the demonstrators, said French army spokesman Colonel Pascal Ianni.

“The demonstrators tried to loot and seize the trucks”, said Ianni. “There were warning shots from Nigerian gendarmes and French soldiers. “

At least two people were killed and some 16 injured during the chaotic protest, local mayor Hamma Mamoudou told Reuters. The victims were “probably” inflicted by gunfire, the official said.

The convoy received a cold reception in Niger after spending a week under the blockade of demonstrators in Burkina Faso. Last weekend, the column was trapped in the Burkinabé town of Kaya by hundreds of demonstrators, who expressed their anger at France’s military presence, as well as its inability to stop the militant attacks raging in the region.
