MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Donald Trump’s attorneys have sought to block the federal grand jury from summoning his close allies to testify about the former president’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. election, CNN reported Saturday, citing sources.
Trump’s legal team invoked executive and attorney-client privileges to bar his former aides and attorneys from appearing as witnesses in a criminal investigation into the January 2021 storming of the US Capitol, according to The report.
The legal battle is under seal and there is no public record of the legal proceedings, according to the Democratic-leaning broadcaster. It was reportedly revealed after Trump’s former White House adviser and attorney Eric Herschmann received a grand jury subpoena. His testimony was delayed.
People familiar with the matter told CNN that Herschmann was instructed by Trump’s lawyers not to share information. Other aides have been able to testify before the grand jury in recent weeks after negotiating specific topics they would refuse to talk about.
