A rider from the Jumbo team, the German Tony Martin, placed in the front rows of the peloton, struck the sign of a spectator encroaching on the roadway. In his fall, he involved numerous runners, on the narrow roadway and the side aisles.
In great confusion, the runners on the ground were rescued or helped out. Germany’s Jasha Sutterlin (DSM) was however forced to retire in the following minutes.
At the time of the accident, which occurred at km 152 of this 197.8 km long stage, only one competitor, the Dutchman Ide Schelling, had escaped with less than two minutes in advance. The first part of the peloton then decided to wait for the bulk of the group to reform, with the riders caught in the fall.
The Italian champion Sonny Colbrelli and the Belgian champion Wout van Aert were among the delayed riders with in particular the Colombian climber Miguel Angel Lopez.
