Thomas Tuchel tells Romelu Lukaku to look more like Timo Werner to win starting XI return, as ex-Chelsea star tells out-of-form Belgian to ‘look in the mirror’

Thomas Tuchel has told Romelu Lukaku to do ‘exactly’ what Timo Werner did to get back into Chelsea’s starting XI.

The Chelsea boss offered some advice to the Belgium international ahead of his FA Cup semi-final win over Crystal Palace, however, not all suggestions were so kindly given.

Romelu has underperformed since signing for the Blues last summer for £98million

Lukaku has been unable to recreate his fine form from last season since a £98million return to the Premier League.

He has scored just 12 goals so far in all competitions in his second spell at Stamford Bridge, compared to 27 for Inter Milan this time last year.

Blues striker Timo Werner has faced the same problem until recently, also unable to come into the side after a dry spell up front and falling down the pecking order to train Kai Havertz.

However, Werner has since emerged from his slump and started six of Chelsea’s last eight games, scoring three goals – the same total as star striker Kai Havertz in that time.

The German duo were chosen to lead the line again in Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Palace, where goals from Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek sealed a 2-0 win.

Lukaku only came off the bench in the 77th minute, replacing Havertz shortly after Mount scored the team’s second goal.

Lukaku hit the post with a late chance against Crystal Palace at Wembley

The Belgian was close to message Tuchel with a goal, only to have his late effort denied by the post after some great work from Werner.

Before the match, Tuchel told Lukaku to emulate what his German teammate did if he wants to regain his place in the team.

“What Timo did is exactly what [Lukaku] must do,” said the Chelsea boss.

“Wait, be patient, work hard and put the team first, be ready to help the team because as a striker you can help in seconds.

“Now [Werner] made it difficult to leave him outside. I’m impressed, he’s been very, very good in the last two games.

Werner said he was unhappy with the way things were going at Chelsea last month but has since rediscovered his shooting boots.

“Those were two games where he was much better than any other game and he showed what he was capable of. Everyone thinks that we as managers make the line-up, and of course we we do.

“But in the end the players make sure you don’t leave them out, they do that in training or in games, and of course in games, that’s the opportunity for everyone. ”

“Especially for attackers, things can be turned around in minutes, in moments. Entire careers can be turned upside down and in any direction, but always as a striker you can have a chance to put things in your favor.

Tuchel urged Lukaku to be ready if he had a chance at Wembley

“He’s done it in the last two games and that’s what we expect from him. That’s what he has to show and then he makes sure he plays.

But while Tuchel offered words of encouragement to Lukaku, former Chelsea star Scott Minto gave the striker much more direct advice, saying the striker needed to ‘look in the mirror’.

“I think the modern day player wants to have his arm around his shoulder all the time, not wanting to accept criticism,” Minto said on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast.

“I don’t think there are that many leaders in the game now because of the way the players are trained, and it’s almost like the manager has overshot in terms of movement almost like it’s in a chess-like game.

Minto played for Chelsea between 1994 and 1997

“I’m sorry, he has to get up. You know Thomas Tuchel must have said ‘Yeah, go for Romelu Lukaku at the start of the season’, and you know it’s up to Lukaku to be the player everyone expected of him in a Chelsea shirt.

He continued: “You’re under a world-class manager, you look in the mirror and say ‘well, what am I going to do here?

“’Am I going to sulk? I don’t need the money, I never need to work again, neither do my children. So what am I going to do now?

“The question marks are always off with him as a Premier League player and we all think the Premier League is the best league in the world, and yet every time he’s played there, except maybe [at] Everton, he hasn’t really proven himself, not at the very top.

“So look in the mirror, Romelu.”
