Fans on the side watched helplessly in the video shared by the Argentinian media Radio Jesus-Maria as the horrific onslaught continued as La Puerta’s opponents Sportivo Tirolesa celebrated their victory.

Referee Eduardo Pastorino was taken to hospital for treatment for the injuries he sustained.

Regional league president Gustavo Garcia, filmed being beaten as he tried to stop the violence, also needed medical attention.

The outrageous scenes happened at the end of an amateur cup final in Colonia Tirolesa in the Argentine province of Cordoba.

Several spectators also reportedly took part in the attack on the referee and the league president after jumping over the perimeter fence on the pitch.

Footage of when Garcia was assaulted showed a man knocking him down from behind before another kicked him as he lay on the ground near the center circle.

Eight La Puerta players and three spectators have already been identified by police as the alleged attackers.

Local reports say that La Puerta had complained about several refereeing decisions during the game before the penalty shootout.

The condition of referee Pastorino is not yet known.

In October, a Brazilian footballer was charged with attempted murder after he was filmed punching a referee in the head.

Former Sport Club Sao Paulo ace William Ribeiro has attacked the referee after inflicting a foul on him in an away league game against Guarani.

The game was interrupted for almost 15 minutes while Rodrigo Crivellaro was taken to hospital.

Video footage from the match showed how Ribeiro threw Crivellaro to the ground before taking another gruesome kick to the head.
