‘The Gray Man’ Trailer: Gosling vs. Evans in Netflix’s Most Expensive Movie Ever Made

Netflix stock may be diving red, but the beleaguered streaming service is going all-out on “The Gray Man.”

With a record production budget of $200 million, much of which likely went to maintain Chris Evans’ impeccable mustache, the upcoming action flick is one of the most anticipated on Netflix’s slate, considering star power in front of and behind the camera. .

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, makers of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ among other Marvel movies, ‘The Gray Man’ pits Evans against Ryan Gosling for a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse coming to theaters on July 15, before dropping on the streamer a week later.

Gosling stars as Court Gentry, aka Sierra Six, a high-level CIA agent who goes on the run after uncovering damaging agency secrets. Mercenary Lloyd Hansen (Evans) is tasked with leading the global manhunt to find him, while racking up a large death toll along the way.

“If you want to make an omelet, you have to kill people,” says Evans, who clearly enjoys playing Captain America type, in the trailer.

“It’s hard to find someone at the level of Chris Evans to step into a villain,” Joe Russo told Entertainment Weekly of the Marvel star’s casting. “That’s why you don’t traditionally get a Ryan Gosling versus Chris Evans movie. But he’s at a point where [playing the villain] is more fun for him than playing a hero, so we’re able to have two giant movie stars go head-to-head. They’re very complicated characters with competing agendas, and it’s a fight to the death.

Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick and Alfre Woodard also star in the spy thriller.

Adapted from Mark Greaney’s book of the same name, the film is set to launch a new franchise centered around the character of Gosling, who presumably survives the chaos to direct future adventures.

But, of course, a movie like “The Gray Man” is less about a plot and more about two of the most famous movie actors wailing over each other in spectacular action sets around the world. And, by that metric, the first look certainly lives up to the hype.
