The EU will provide 2 billion euros to complete the military aid fund for Ukraine

European Union foreign ministers have agreed to inject an additional two billion euros into a fund to finance military support for Ukraine.

The fund has been largely depleted after almost ten months of war since Russia’s illegal invasion.

Meeting in Brussels on Monday, ministers said other top-ups were also possible.

“We will help Ukraine repair its energy system,” EU High Representative Josep Borrell told the EU Foreign Affairs Council, “we will increase our electricity exports to Ukraine; we will continue to work to hold accountable all those involved in this war to make impunity impossible.”

The ministers also planned to discuss a ninth round of sanctions against Russia, as well as new sanctions against Iran for its crackdown on anti-government protests.

“We consider the use of capital punishment as a tool to suppress protesters to be unacceptable,” Borrell said. “In the new sanctions package for human rights violations, we target those responsible for this continued crackdown on protesters.”

Twenty people and one entity were sanctioned for human rights violations, while four other people and as many entities were added for the issue of drone deliveries to Russia.

Sanctions include asset freezes and a travel ban to the EU.
