Let’s talk about chairs. It’s one of our favorite topics over the past year, and for good reason. Working from home made us think a lot more about what we literally do all day. Before the pandemic, I used a cheap $ 50 IKEA swivel chair that was peeling off. He had no support to speak of and was probably killing my back. It was good to come home and sit for a few minutes after hours, but not so much for eight hours of sitting straight. I eventually upgraded, but even that’s not enough to keep up with the strain of the work day.

So we asked our readers to help us out last week by pointing out the best office chairs for under $ 300. While a great chair can cost up to $ 1,000 and up, we wanted to see if it was possible to get a great chair on a budget. Our readers took up the challenge and shared a wide range of ideas (including a straight recliner, which I respect). So the good news is that it is very possible to get a good office chair for under $ 300. They might not be as high end as an expensive chair, but they will definitely be an upgrade.

Without further ado: sit up straight and enjoy this list of the best office chairs for under $ 300, chosen by our readers.

Benefits:

  • Setup was straightforward and easy to follow (one person can complete in 30 minutes)
  • Aluminum wheelbase
  • Came with both roller wheels and caster wheels (roller blade works better and is quieter, but adds an extra inch or two)
  • Full mesh padding makes it breathable all around
  • Padded armrests lift and move as needed
  • Reclining and locking backrest, four colors to choose from (black, blue, red, gray)

The inconvenients:

  • The headrest only goes up so high so if you are a tall person it becomes a neck / shoulder rest
  • If you are a shorter person, installing the roller wheels will make it more difficult for your feet to contact the ground at the lowest setting.
  • Cannot adjust the height of the armrests
  • No forward tilt – CGJackal

I bought a Tempur-Pedic office chair from Staples several years ago. I then bought a second because it is the only chair I have ever found that eliminates numb buttocks.

It has a Tempur-Pedic cushion for the seat and a comfortable mesh backrest. Robust. I sat at my desk for hours and had to get up because my butt was numb and losing circulation. That never happens with this office chair – highly recommend. – Samwiseglamgee

Last May, I decided to treat myself to a new computer chair because of the time I spent there. I searched everywhere for reviews but they were rare and hard to find as people seemed to be aiming for the Staples Hyken for my budget at the time. However, I really liked the footrest option. In the end, it was a draw between this one and the Hyken. I ended up choosing this one because it had the legrest option, and I like having my feet on something whether or not they’re in place. Also, I thought to myself if Autonomous makes a good $ 200 chair, so when this one goes to the Shadow Realm, if it leaves a good impression, I might be convinced to upgrade. The chair has a good rock that also allows you to lean back when the backrest is unlocked. There are three “lock” positions that can be engaged depending on how far back you want to go, which my last chair had only one and no rocking motion. I managed to find a decent promotion that got me $ 50 off. So far I’m happy. Some reviews said the pad doesn’t last long, but after a year of use I’m still comfortable and not feeling the bars they were talking about.

In my eyes, the pros outweigh the cons, as the cons are more in the row of personal taste, for me.

Benefits:

  • Comfortable
  • Wide seat so I can sit cross-legged
  • Good rock / lean back which is not too stiff / loose
  • Optional foot / leg rest
  • Optional headrest

The inconvenients:

  • HEAVY in the package. Moving this thing solo sucks.
  • Headrest is loose / wobbly. Not sure if this is the norm as reviews weren’t easy to find.
  • The headrest also seems a bit too far back to be useful.
  • The armrests may be too hard for some people.
  • Cannot change the angle of the seat cushion itself.
  • Lack of fun colors. You get black or gray.

It’s good. My only complaint is that this is not a high back chair, but for the price, [it has] great support and [is] very comfortable. Chris Frickland
