WHY DO THE COWBOYS OF DALLAS AND THE LIONS OF DETROIT ALWAYS HAVE A THANKSGIVING GAME?

There’s no official reason the Lions and Cowboys still play Thanksgiving, but it has become kind of a tradition at this point.

The Lions started playing Thanksgiving in 1934, while the Cowboys started their Thanksgiving games in 1966.

In 2021, the Detroit Lions will play their 82nd annual Thanksgiving game.

It’s the most that a team has played during the holidays, cementing them in their traditional place.

When former team owner George A. Richards bought the Lions in 1934, he wanted to build a bigger fan base. He decided to host the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, attracting thousands of fans.

Since then, the Lions have hosted a game every year during the holidays – the only time they didn’t was during World War II.

Tex Schramm, the Dallas Cowboys general manager in 1966, decided that in order to gain more national recognition, the team should host a vacation game.

Every year since – with the exception of 1975 and 1977 – the Dallas Cowboys have hosted a football game for Thanksgiving Day.
