The charge is a third-degree felony in Texas, with a possible sentence of two to 10 years in prison. Jail records showed Beard had yet to post bond as of Monday morning and did not indicate when he would make his first court appearance. No lawyer for him has been listed.

“The university is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We continue to gather information and monitor the legal process,” the school said in a statement.

The Longhorns (7-1), who have been ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 this season, host Rice on Monday night.

Beard is in his second season of a guaranteed seven-year contract that pays him more than $5 million a year. Before coming to Texas, he led Texas Tech to the 2019 NCAA Tournament Championship Game.

Texas freshman guard Arterio Morris also faces a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from an arrest in June after an incident with a former girlfriend and faces a court hearing Wednesday in the county of Denton, near Dallas.

Morris was one of Dallas’ top national rookies and was cleared to play this season despite the charge, and is averaging 17 minutes and 6.5 points per game. Morris’ attorney, Justin Moore, said Moore was innocent of the assault charge.
