Teen arrested for shooting a gun as Minneapolis police respond to stabbing at Washburn High School

A 16-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly shooting a handgun outside Washburn High School as police responded to a stabbing in the auditorium minutes earlier.
A large number of officers responded to 911 calls around 8 p.m. about a ‘big fight’ in the South Minneapolis school auditorium, Police Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters at the scene. .
A teenager, also 16, was found with a non-life-threatening stab wound to his lower back.
Some pointed to those suspected of initiating the scuffle at police clearing the crowd, and officers chased them, O’Hara said.
As an officer approached the southwest corner of the school, he heard gunshots and saw a muzzle flash near the intersection of Busch Terrace and Pleasant Avenue. The shooting suspect, another 16-year-old boy, was arrested and officers recovered a Glock handgun with a 50-round drum magazine, O’Hara said.
Three casings were found at the scene, which were recorded by officers.
The school was hosting a Somali cultural night, student Teddy Klarkowski said near the filming scene.
“We just saw people running down the street,” he said. “We heard gunshots, I wasn’t sure how many shots.”
A 17-year-old boy who was running with the suspect was arrested, but O’Hara said he was undecided whether he would face charges. The leader did not know what or who the suspect was shooting at, or if the two taken were related at the start of the fight.
The stabbed suspect remains at large, O’Hara said.
