CNN host Jake Tapper hit out at the Biden administration for spreading “manifestly false” rumors about border patrol officers riding on the southern border during Sunday’s “State of the Union” .
When a now infamous image of a border patrol officer mounted on a horse appearing to be corral migrants with a rope hit social media last week, critics were quick to accuse officers of “Whipping” Haitian migrants attempting to enter the country illegally. More context for the photo revealed, however, that the reins were only used to control their horses. Still, Main Democrats and members of the media have continued the original story and the Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation into the matter. To some, it seemed like members of the Biden administration had already made up their minds about the agents.
“I promise you these people will pay,” President Biden said. “They will be – an ongoing investigation now, and there will be consequences. And there will be consequences.”
BORDER PATROL OFFICERS ON HORSEBACK NARRATIVE MEDIA PEDDLES USING ‘WHISKS’ ON HATIAN MIGRANTS IN DEL RIO
White House press secretary Jen Psaki took the same approach, accusing the border patrol of “brutal and inappropriate” behavior.
Although he said he would “wait for the facts” in the DHS investigation, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also said the footage “horrified” Americans. Tapper urged him on how DHS can “pretend” to be conducting an independent investigation, given how the administration has described the footage at the border. The CNN host questioned whether the agency would conduct the investigation “on the basis of the facts, not on the basis of Twitter outrage.”
Mayorkas clarified that what the images “suggest” is what “horrifies” Americans, and vowed that the facts will lead to the result.
“But that’s the problem. Some of the initial descriptions of these images were just plainly wrong,” Tapper insisted. “There is now a video that provides more context. After watching the video, are you sure there has been wrongdoing?”
Mayorkas called Border Patrol agents “heroic” and “tireless” and said he was “incredibly proud” to work alongside them, leaving Tapper to wonder if he shared the same feelings with Biden .
“The beautiful words you said about [Border Patrol], you should probably share with President Biden, not just with me today, ”Tapper said.
MEDIA FACT CHECKERS AVOID FALSE NARRATIVES FROM BORDER PATROL OFFICERS “WHIP” “HATIAN MIGRANTS
Others, like Texas Land commissioner and state attorney general candidate George P. Bush tore media pundits and lawmakers who ran with the cycle of misleading information, sharing video of a previous visit to the border in El Paso to show that the agents do not have “whips”.
“These are split reins that give officers extra control over the horse that they use as a tool, not a weapon,” Bush tweeted on Saturday. “They are certainly not whips, because [President] Biden and [Vice President Kamala Harris] want us to believe. “

Mayorkas admitted on Sunday that many Haitian migrants who crossed the southern border have already been released in the United States.
“Roughly, I think it’s about ten thousand or more, twelve thousand,” Mayorkas told “Fox News Sunday.”
“It could be even higher,” Mayorkas said. “The number of returns could be even higher. What we’re doing is following the law as Congress passed it.”
