UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Syria fully supports the grain deal between Russia and Ukraine, sees Western countries as responsible for the problems currently facing developing countries and Turkey’s lack of commitment is the only obstacle to stalling the peace process in Syria, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told Sputnik.

“We fully support this [grain deal]. Western countries are responsible for the problems facing developing countries. They do not agree to facilitate the entry of Russian goods into international markets when they want the Ukrainian side to do everything. I think it’s absolutely unfair,” Mekdad said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Friday.

Mekdad called alleged Western plans to let Ukraine play the same role as Russia, including its support for the development of countries around the world, “absolutely illogical”.

Turkey’s lack of commitment is the only obstacle blocking the peace process in Syria within the framework of Astana, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told Sputnik.

“We ask the Turkish side to be more serious in implementing its commitments as agreed by the Astana process. This is the only problem we are facing, but we believe that the efforts of our friends, both Russians and Iranians, are moving in the right direction,” Mekdad said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Friday.

Mekdad added that the Astana process was so far “the only viable element that succeeded on the ground” and resulted in “many successes”. The Syrian minister noted that there were no contacts or meetings with the Turkish side during the UN General Assembly high-level week.

“There are no negotiations, there are no contacts, there is nothing at least at the level of foreign ministers,” Mekdad said.
