Syria says Israel carried out new attack near Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria – Explosions were heard in the Syrian capital on Friday evening, which Syrian media said were the result of a new Israeli attack near Damascus.

The official SANA news agency said Syrian air defenses faced “hostile targets” in the skies over rural Damascus, a reference to Israel carrying out hundreds of airstrikes in war-torn Syria in the recent years.

Pro-government newspaper Cham FM said the Israeli attack caused a fire near Damascus International Airport, leading to the postponement of two flights.

There was no comment from Israel, which rarely confirms its activities inside Syria. It says it is targeting Iran-allied militia bases, such as the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah which has fighters deployed in Syria and fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government forces, and arms shipments believed to be be intended for the militias.

The latest attack took place on May 13, when Israeli missiles hit the town of Masyaf in the Hama countryside, killing five people, according to Syrian state media.
