India’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea to designate a spiritual leader from a particular community as the supreme being, or “Paramatma”. Calling it a “publicity interest dispute”, the highest court in the land penalized the petitioner, named Upendra Nath Dalai, with ₹100,000 ($1,224). Dalai was asked to file the penalty amount within the stipulated four-week deadline or he will face contempt proceedings. Dalai was present in person and pleaded for declaring Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra as the supreme deity of all citizens of India. Angered by his argument, the bench joked, “If you want, you can call it Paramatma. Why impose it on others? We are not here to listen to your lecture. We are a secular country.”

The Supreme Court has seen a series of unusual pleas lately. A few weeks ago, the Supreme Court rejected a man’s request to be named President of India.
India’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea that sought to name a spiritual leader from a particular community as the supreme being, or “Paramatma.”
“India is a secular country and the petitioner cannot be allowed to pray that the citizens of India will accept Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra as Paramatma,” a bench consisting of Judges MR Shah and CT Ravikumar said in the order.
Dalai was asked to file the penalty amount within the stipulated four-week deadline or he will face contempt proceedings.
The Dalai was present in person and advocated for the declaration of Sri Sri Thakur Anukul Chandra as the supreme deity of all citizens of India.
Angered by his argument, the bench joked, “If you want, you can call it Paramatma. Why impose it on others? We are not here to listen to your lecture. We are a secular country.”
“You say everyone should accept your leader. How is that possible? In India, everyone has the right to choose their religion, their God,” he concluded.
